Halloween Literacy Freebies

Halloween can be one of the greatest motivators in the classroom!
That's why I have created some Halloween literacy activities that will get kids playing around with Halloween words and composing spooky Halloween stories.

In Who's Coming to the Party students are given the names of the who will be at the Halloween party but all of the vowels are missing. Some words will be easy but some are sure to challenge them!

This Halloween Word Search and Riddle puzzle is much more than just a word search. After children have solved the word search they are rewarded with a Halloween riddle but they will have to work out the answer for themselves!

 

 

Another great idea for Halloween is to have children compose some spooky stories. I have created a collection of Halloween Story Starters at

There are 7 story starters for students to choose from. You can print each and display as is or cut around the webs and make a chart with them like I have done.

These spooky story starters are sure to fire up their imagination!

 

Here is another really simple idea for a Halloween Word Game.

The game can be played by 2 players or 2 teams.

Draw a grid of about 8x8 on a piece of paper or a whiteboard.

Fill the grid with Halloween themed words. You can read the words going across the grid in the photo above.

Now the players or teams take turns to make a word from the letters in the grid and cross off the letters.

The letters can be anywhere on the board not like a word search where the letters have to be in a line. In the photo above the first player has crossed off the letters for 'crow'.

The last player or team who can make a word is the winner.

This is a great game for spelling skills.

Halloween Math Fun!

Halloween is a great topic to use to motivate kids in math!
Adding a little bit of Halloween to your math means adding loads and loads of fun too!

Halloween Fractions

Here is a really simple way to have some fun with fractions at Halloween.

Brainstorm a list of Halloween words then calculate the fraction of consonants and vowels.

This is a great activity for developing the concept of fractions.

Playing games is also a great way to incorporate Halloween into Math time. That's why I have created 4 new sets of Halloween Math Games for grades 1 to 4.

Halloween Math Games Grade by Grade

These sets allow students to practise and review basic math concepts for their grade while they have so much fun that they don't even realize that they are actually learning!
Each set contains 14 printable Halloween Games. The games are a mix of board games and No Prep game sheets for 2 players. These games are ideal for Halloween math centers, fast finishers or even Halloween homework. Let me show you a few games from each set.

The Count Dracula Board Game has children count their way around the board.

In Halloween Spooky Pairs Add to 10, the players take turns to color a pair of adjoining numbers that add to 10. The last player to color a pair is the winner.

These are from the Second Grade set of Halloween Math Games.

In the Halloween 13 Bats Board Game, the players take turns to cover 2 or 3 numbers that add to 13. In the Halloween Pairs 11, 12 or 13, the players color pairs of adjoining numbers that add to the total in the bat.

These cute, cute games are from Halloween Math Games Third Grade.

Batty times Three, Four or Five is a multiplication game and Halloween Difference of 9 is a subtraction game. Trick or Treat Pairs and Trios will really get them thinking as they search for 2 or 3 numbers that add to 31. Batty Subtraction will test them on their subtraction skills.

These are from Halloween Math Games Fourth Grade. Halloween Lucky Sevens has students divide by 7 and determine if there is a remainder or not. Halloween Multiply and Color has them search for sets of three numbers that can make a multiplication equation.

Halloween Math Puzzles

I love math that makes kids think!
If you include a few spiders, ghost, pumpkins or bats, that makes this kind of math perfect for Halloween.
Just wanted to share a few Halloween math puzzles that I have put together to make kids think!

Here are the counting ghosts. The children have to complete the counting sequence in the grid, but first they have to work out the order and direction of the numbers!



This is Spiders Covers. It challenges the kids to place the numbers on the board, covering a pair of numbers that total the number on the piece.

This is a Halloween Sudoku where the children have to place all of the pictures on the board without having the same picture in any row, column or diagonal.  

Batty Numbers is a number quiz.

Halloween Literacy Freebies

Halloween is creeping up on us and the kids are getting more and more excited!
I love to give kids Halloween themed activities and I also love to give them activities that make them think!

That's why I created these Halloween word puzzles!

     

There are two printable Halloween word puzzles that will make them think!

The first one is a Halloween Word Search with a difference. After the children have found the Halloween words in the word search, they find the answer to the Halloween riddle by using the letters that are left in the word search.

 

The second Halloween word puzzle has listed the people who are coming to the Halloween party but the vowels have been left out of the words. The puzzle is to work out the names on the list.
